Remember When?

Thank you to Joe Celauro '61 for sharing this memory from his PiKA days...

He writes, "The Gamma Lambda House at Lehigh was mostly made up of conservatives. At the time, John Kennedy was running for president and he was going to give a campaign speech at the Bethlehem Allentown Airport.  Then he was going to Moravian for a speech.  Even though I was a Republican Conservative, I wanted to hear him speak, because he could become my president.

Bob Staff and I decided to sneak out of the house and go to the airport to hear him.  We did. When we got there the crowd was huge, and I was in the front row. When Kennedy's plane landed the crowd surged and fearful of my life, I jumped up on to the roof of the press car.  The photographers allowed me to stay there as they took picture of the candidate, just ten feet from me.

The next day at the fraternity house, I came down for breakfast and saw a sign which read, "Traitor Celauro" with a picture in the local paper of Kennedy giving his speech, with my head in the crowd. I got caught.

I voted for Nixon, in my first vote ever, but Kennedy became my president, and I got to see and hear him."
